Bubbling Hot Lava Chocolate Fudge Cake

Who can resist a warm chocolate cake that bubbles up with it's own hot fudge sauce? No one at our house! This is a recipe that tastes fabulous, but is very easy to make. Don't we all want a few more recipes like that?
At our home, this cake is served for birthdays, Sunday dinners, youth events for church and even out of a Dutch oven when we are camping. It is easy to prepare as a pantry mix which makes it a great choice for camping. When preparing as a pantry mix, combine all the dry ingredients for the cake in a ziplock bag. Be sure and package the topping ingredients in a separate bag. Add water, melted butter, egg, and vanilla when preparing.

Hot Lava Chocolate Fudge Cake

Cake:
¾ cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup whole wheat flour
¾ cup sugar
6 Tbsp cocoa powder
1 Tbsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
2½ Tbsp dry milk powder
¾ cup water
6 Tbsp butter, melted
1 egg
1 Tbsp vanilla

¾ cup chocolate chips (optional)

Topping:
¾ cup sugar
6 Tbsp cocoa powder
1½ cups boiling water

Combine the cake ingredients and mix until just combined. If you are choosing to use chocolate chips, fold them into the batter. Scrape the batter into a greased 9x13 pan, spreading it evenly into all the corners. Combine the sugar and cocoa powder for the topping. Sprinkle this evenly over the cake batter. Gently pour the boiling water over the entire cake. Do not stir. Bake at 350° for 26-28 minutes. You want the top of the cake to crack and the sauce to be bubbling. Insert a toothpick into the cakey area. If it comes out clean, the cake is done. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes. This cake is best served warm with vanilla ice cream .
