Pizza Pot Pie

Sometimes we are in the mood for the flavor of pizza, but not the work. This recipe is a perfect solution for those nights. I always keep precooked sausage and hamburger in the freezer so this meal can be thrown together in a quick hurry. It is also one we love to do when we are camping. My husband is a scout master so coming up with recipes that can be done in a Dutch oven that 16 hungry boys will love is a challenge. This is one they all enjoy!

Pizza Pot Pie

1 lb hamburger
1 lb pork or Italian sausage
¼ cup chopped onion
¼ cup chopped green pepper
15-20 slices of pepperoni, quartered
1 can green beans, drained
1 can mushrooms, drained
1 (15oz) can tomato sauce
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil
½ tsp garlic powder
1 cup grated mozzarella or cheddar cheese

Batter:
5 Tbsp dry milk powder
½ tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1¾ cups all-purpose flour
½ tsp dried oregano
½ tsp dried basil
½ tsp garlic powder
3 eggs
1½ Tbsp vegetable oil
1½ cups water

Brown hamburger and sausage with onions and green peppers in a large skillet. Drain. Stir in pepperoni, green beans, mushrooms, tomato sauce and seasonings. Allow to simmer for 5-8 minutes until heated through. Pour into a greased 9x13 pan. Top with shredded cheese. Combine batter ingredients. Stir just until combined. Pour over mixture in 9x13 pan. Bake at 400° for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center of dough comes out clean.

Dutch Oven Instructions:
Before going camping: Cook and combine filling ingredients and store in a ziplock bag. Mix the dry ingredients for the batter in a separate ziplock bag.
At camp: Start at least 40 charcoal briquettes for heat. These will take 20-30 minutes to get hot.
Pour filling into a greased or foil lined 12" Dutch oven. Place 10 coals under the Dutch oven and allow the filling to warm through. Mix the batter ingredients and pour over the top of warm filling. Place 20 coals on the lid and replace coals under the oven if needed. Bake for approximately 25 minutes. Rotate the lid about ¼ turn clockwise and the oven about ¼ turn counter-clockwise about every 10 minutes to provide a little more even cooking. You want the top of the batter  to crack and be golden brown.  Insert a toothpick into the batter and see if it comes out clean.

  1. We make a similar pizza but use a popover recipe for the top, then turn it upsidedown on each plate so crust is on bottom.
